From day one as an M-School intern, I was thrown into the fast-paced environment of Publishing. Working with Texture, formerly known as Next Issue, has given me great insight into the future of Publishing. Texture is an interactive app with on-the-go access to over 150 magazines. This gave me the ability to get familiar with many magazines and their culture.

There is no better feeling as an intern to turn on Breakfast Television and see a commercial that you were on set for, or to go online and see digital ads that you creatively led, or to get an email that you made executive decisions about, or to pick up the latest Food & Drink magazine at the LCBO to see an insert that you worked on. At that moment your work becomes a reality.

This experience was no walk in the park, but who would want that? Every day you are pushed to the limits of what you can do, but that shows you that your work and opinion is valued. You leave this experience knowing you have done all you can, to the best of your ability. M-School was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and there is no other program like it.

What were your primary tasks?

  • Acquisition and marketing
  • Collecting and analyzing data for future campaigns
  • Strong focus on email marketing
  • Event coordination
  • Working with external marketing agencies and vendors
  • Integrating overall marketing campaigns with digital elements

Describe one day in the workplace.

Faced-paced, lots of meetings and lots of coffee! A typical day would consist of checking emails, going to team meetings, contacting vendors about current campaigns and upcoming opportunities, making sure deadlines are met, then preparing for the next crazy day. Thursdays included going to M-School seminars to learn about different areas of Publishing. Sometimes a day in the workplace consisted of going to a live taping of Cityline or a box suite at a Blue Jays game—you never know what your day will bring!
