M-School title: Digital Intern, Flare
Post-secondary institution: Western University
Program of study: Bachelor of Management & Organizational Studies, Specialization in Consumer Behaviour
The program went completely beyond all of my expectations. There wasn’t a day where I wasn’t busy or faced with exciting new experiences. M-School really is a priceless experience. I was able to make an immediate impact in my role and be part of a team that valued my ideas and skills. I’ve learned how to consistently push myself to be proactive and as efficient as possible. This is truly a reflection of the incredible work environment and culture at Rogers Media. At the end of the day, it is so satisfying to see all that I’ve accomplished and the amazing opportunities I’ve been given. It will all be invaluable to the future of my career. One of the highlights was the weekly sessions where we met and had discussions with experienced Rogers Media employees who gave us an inside look at the company. You can’t gain that type of exposure or knowledge anywhere else.
What were your primary tasks?
Write and create posts for Flare.com; cover events and live interviews; interview celebrities; craft content on social media; film live-streaming videos on Periscope.
Describe one day in the workplace?
No day is the same at Flare. In the mornings, I check all of our social media channels and begin scheduling posts for the day. If there is anything trending or timely to report on, I might create a post on that topic. I’m usually working on multiple posts or galleries for the website. Sometimes I attend events or interviews with celebrities. Tasks often pop up throughout the day and I have to be ready to tackle them on the fly.
What is your proudest accomplishment from the internship?
I am proud of many of the posts I published on the website. I’m particularly proud of the stories where I was able to write a fair amount of copy and really research a topic. Coming from a business background and not having done much writing, it was fun to challenge myself and see improvement in my writing over the course of the internship.
What is your dream job?
One of my dream jobs is to travel the world and write about my experiences. I’d also love to be a National Geographic photographer.
If money was no object, what would you do all day?
I’d live in Thailand and swim, eat, scuba dive and work with the locals.
